Freewriting for a Solid Draft

Many students have writer's block as they begin a writing assignment. Since writer's block means they are not writing, one of the fastest ways to conquer the problem is to just begin writing anything at all. This is the so-called freewriting technique. They can write whatever they are thinking, feeling, wondering about, or just trying to get off their chests in reaction to a writing prompt. The only rule here is that they must not stop to check spelling, grammar, punctuation, or other parts of the writing. Often, a time limit is set, and people just keep on writing until the timer goes off. Your students can practice this method at our third ELF workshop in H-118 this coming Friday, 9/30, noon-1:30pm.
