Why ESL Tutoring Program Gives Two Presentations

Our ESL tutors have sent two presentation proposals to the organizers of Tutor Expo 2016, and both have been accepted. In the ESL Tutoring Program, we have the best tutors and the best practices. Palomar's ESL students receive warm, welcoming service at the ESL Tutoring Center, where the tutors engage them in an empowering learning process. As well, we have some of the best teacher-tutor collaborations in an embedded tutoring context where both partners play different yet equitable roles. No wonder ESL Tutoring wants to showcase these two of their core values: learner-centered teaching, and tutor professionalization.

At Tutor Expo 2016 this Friday, ESL tutor Mike Rouse and ESL professor Larry Lawson will demonstrate how they collaborated musically in their classroom. They have adapted different rap songs and created new lyrics to sing them together in order to teach some key learning concepts. They have achieved so much in this way. Another three ESL tutors, Anita Maloney, Siegrid Rogers, and Christl Dorsey, will present on a process to empower students. They will show what is an effective tutoring session vs. an ineffective one, using and showcasing a repertoire of tutoring strategies. The Palomar ESL Tutoring delegation also hopes to return from the weekend conference rejuvenated and renewed, with new perspectives offered by fellow attendees.
