The Primary Focus of Proposed Legislation

Did you know that recently, a small bipartisan group of congressmen led by Rep. Tim Ryan (D-Ohio) proposed HR 1875 - the Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning Act of 2013? The interplay between social emotional intelligence and academic success is the focus of this bill. If the bill is passed and enacted, emotional intelligence and critical thinking will be part of relevant federal policy. To those of us in education who are concerned with factors contributing to student success, there is a general excitement about the prospect of the two parties getting up close and personal with this important issue. A rising awareness of this issue should stoke a national debate over how best to teach students.
