Did you know that National Latino Research Center at CSUSM and the SD County Library are sponsoring an Oral History Conference: Preserving Local Community Histories on March 6 at the San Marcos Senior Center? Click here for the flyer and here for the Spanish version.
In fact, the County library is also sponsoring a project called "The People's Post." The goal of the project is to get people to tell their story of growing up in, moving to, and living in the San Diego County. The story will be videorecorded by a videographer, given to the interviewee on a CD, and also made available to the public on a web site.
The project coordinator, Maria Houghton, told Gary Sosa, who has passed on all this information, that she would go out to your classes to advertise this opportunity. The interview does not have to be in English, but it would be a great opportunity to get students to prepare a story in English (3 to 5 minutes spoken) and communicate to a real audience. Maria said that it is preferred that the interview is written out and practiced prior to the interview.
The project will run until April 1. Interview appointments will be at the Fallbrook library branch on Sundays 12 - 4 and Tuesdays 4 - 7 and at the San Marcos branch on Wednesdays 3 - 7 and Saturdays 10- 3.
If you are interested in this project, please call Maria at (619)739-1662.

I had them come into my class on Tuesday in Fallbrook to explain the project. Then, our class voted on whether or not they wanted to proceed in getting involved with the project. They voted yes--on condition of a deal: if they had to do it in English, I had to do it in Spanish.
So, we have a deal, and we're going to take a field trip to the Fallbrook library to make our recordings at the end of the month!
