2009 ESL Resident Scholarships

The Foundation has informed us that this year, they can sponsor eight ESL students to each receive the $200 "ESL Resident Scholarship." We will continue to award these particular scholarships on a teacher-recommended basis. International students on a student visa are not eligible, nor are students taking NESL 300, NESL 301, and NESL 302. This latter restriction was decided at our last dept. meeting. The idea is to let the money go to those who pay or are going to pay tuition for taking a credit class. Here are some basic criteria for this scholarship:
  1. California resident (as opposed to international students here on a student visa)
  2. Demonstrate financial need (no need to verify; use your best judgment)
  3. Show academic promise
  4. Show initiative and motivation in the classroom
Thus, all ESL faculty--except those teaching NESL 300, NESL 301, and NESL 302--are encouraged to nominate that great student in their class. Faculty will have to write a bio of the student they will nominate. The short bio is due to me by our next dept. meeting on Friday, Apr. 3. You could just email the student bio to me.
