With the start of October and potential wildfires in San Diego County, county officials are urging residents to register their cell phones with AlertSanDiego.
The system will automatically call the numbers if a person's home or business is threatened by an emergency or disaster. The system already includes the county's land-line telephones, whether listed or unlisted, because they are contained in the region's 911 database.
Linda Miller, a county spokeswoman, said signing up is free and can be done in about two minutes at ReadySanDiego.org.
