Latest DRC Resources

Everyone wants his or her students to learn for success. Yet even with the best intentions, one can be so easily tempted by a desire to hold all students up to a rigorous academic standard that a student's request for accommodation gets an automatic rejection. Or one can be eager to name disabilities for students who seem to be struggling. Now, with the launch of the new DRC website at http://www2.palomar.edu/pages/drc/, you can learn more of the various resources, policies, and procedures to be compliant.

Don't say "no" to anyone asking for accommodation. Instead, refer them to the DRC. If someone has a learning disability, they can click on the "Learning Disability Testing" tab on the DRC website to essentially self-report, using the "LD Assessment Self Referral Form." If anyone brings in a dog or a miniature horse as a service animal, district employees are only allowed to ask two specified questions. The DRC website provides other do's and don'ts regarding service animals.

When asked what language to use for a disability statement on our syllabi, DRC's LD Specialist Leigh Ann Van Dyke offers this: "If you have a documented disability or condition which you believe may impact your learning, please contact the Disability Resource Center (DRC) at 760-744-1150 EXT. 2376. Palomar College abides by the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 that prohibit federal and state agencies or programs from discriminating against qualified individuals with disabilities."
