The advantages of this kind of support are numerous. Assistance is individualized. Without an embedded tutor in your classroom, a student who needs extra help with a grammar point, for example, can be required to visit a tutor in A-13 so you don't have to subject the whole class to an unnecessary lesson.
Giving your referred student a note of instructions to take to her tutors has proved to be a highly effective way for the student to engage with learning during her tutoring appointments. This best practice has been used by Larry, Carol, and other colleagues.
At the ESL Tutoring Center, our goal is to provide you with the best possible instructional support, based upon your students' needs. Knowing those needs requires more than you saying "You need to see a tutor" to your students. Since a low-ability student cannot articulate why to see a tutor, your clearly written recommendation AND objective is highly necessary. A quick link to connect with the tutors can be found at this web page: http://www2.palomar.edu/esltutoring/teachers.htm.
With enough advance notice, teachers can also expect us to set some time aside during their class time just for their students to come to A-13 for a group tour or for making appointments en mass, if the teachers so desire.
