Basic Skills Handbook

Full of invaluable information, a 20-chapter-long Basic Skills Handbook has just been completed by California Community Colleges Basic Skills Initiative. Chapter 8 of the handbook is devoted to effective practices in ESL. The chapter comes with its own Appendix section where samples of actual handouts for the practices discussed in the chapter are made available. For example, Appendix 2 Time Management, Appendix 3 Weekly Schedule Template, Appendix 4 Course Information Quiz, and Appendix 5 Midterm Grade Report are all very adaptable to my own teaching situation.

Palomar College's Library has a hard copy of this handbook on reserve. But the entire handbook is also available online here: http://www.cccbsi.org/basic-skills-handbook, chapter by chapter. If you download the Word version, you can easily customize a useful chart or handout to use with your students. I think everybody should take a look at this excellent resource.
